5 Signs Your Child Has a Math Skill Gap
The school year is underway—and this is the perfect time to pay attention to how your child is responding to math.
We’re welcoming students and families across the Southeast back to another school year!

A new semester brings new teachers, new courses, new goals, and new opportunities. But it can also expose something parents may not immediately recognize:
A math skill gap.
A skill gap doesn't always look like a failing grade.
Sometimes, it looks like a student who takes an unusually long time to complete homework. Or a child who suddenly says, “I hate math.” Or a student who understands a concept when the teacher explains it but can't figure out how to solve a similar problem independently.
The earlier parents recognize the signs, the easier it is to address them.
Here are 5 signs to watch for:
✅ Homework Takes WAY Too Long
If a 20-minute assignment regularly turns into an hour-long struggle, your child may be spending more time trying to figure out how to start than actually solving the problems.
✅ Your Child Says, “I Don't Get It,” Over and Over
Repeated confusion isn't necessarily a sign that your child isn't capable. It may indicate that an earlier foundational concept was never fully mastered.
✅ They Can Follow an Example—But Can't Solve the Next Problem
This is a big one.
Your child may understand the steps when someone walks them through a problem but become completely stuck when the numbers or wording change. That's often a sign that they're memorizing procedures instead of developing true mathematical understanding.
✅ They Avoid Math Whenever Possible
Suddenly avoiding homework, refusing to ask questions, becoming frustrated before starting an assignment, or saying things like “I'm just bad at math” can all point to a confidence issue rooted in an underlying skill gap.
✅ Their Grades Don't Match Their Effort
Perhaps your child is studying. They're doing their homework. They're attending class.
But the test grades still aren't reflecting the effort.
That may be a sign that the issue isn't effort—it's that your child needs targeted instruction to identify exactly where the breakdown is happening.
Parents, Don't Wait for the Report Card.
The good news?
Math skill gaps can be addressed.
The key is identifying them early—before one missing skill turns into three, then five, then an entire course that feels overwhelming.
At Sharpe Sessions, we don't believe in simply helping students get through tonight's homework.
Our goal is to identify the why behind the struggle, strengthen foundational skills, build confidence, and help students become independent problem-solvers.
Because when students understand the math, their confidence changes.
And when their confidence changes, their willingness to try changes too.
If you've noticed any of these signs in your child, this is the perfect time to address them—while the semester is still young.
Don't wait until the first bad report card.

Student Spotlight: Miguel
This week, we're incredibly proud to spotlight Miguel, a former Sharpe Sessions student who is proof that intentional preparation can open doors.

Miguel participated in our SAT Ivy Surge Program, where he committed to the process, worked hard, and took his preparation seriously.
And now?
Miguel is attending George Washington University on scholarship!
We couldn't be more excited for Miguel and his family. His story represents exactly what we hope to create through our SAT preparation programs: students who don't simply prepare for a test, but prepare for opportunities.
Miguel put in the work. He stayed committed. He trusted the process. And today, he's reaping the rewards of that investment.
A scholarship can change the financial picture for a family. But the confidence a student develops along the way? That travels with them. From SAT preparation to college success, we're honored to have played a part in Miguel's journey.
Congratulations, Miguel! Your Sharpe Sessions family is cheering you on as you begin this exciting chapter at George Washington University!

Quote of the Week

We love this quote because it captures something we believe deeply: education is an investment that stays with a student for life.
A grade can change. A test score can change. A difficult semester can come and go. But the knowledge, problem-solving skills, confidence, and discipline a student develops along the way become part of who they are.
For parents, this is an important reminder that supporting your child academically is about more than helping them earn an A on the next test.
It’s about helping them build skills they can carry into:
- High school
- College
- Their career
- Financial decisions
- And life beyond the classroom
When a student learns how to think through a difficult problem, they gain more than an answer—they gain a skill they can use again and again.
That’s why at Sharpe Sessions, we don't simply want students to get through math.
We want them to learn math, understand math, and become confident problem-solvers.
Because once they truly learn it, nobody can take that knowledge away from them.

Summer Enrichment Recap
Math + Money + Fun = A Summer to Remember!

Before we officially close the chapter on summer, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate an incredible day from this year's Sharpe Sessions Summer Enrichment! Our students spent the day learning, laughing, collaborating, and—most importantly—discovering that math and money are connected to the world around them.
This year's experience featured three interactive stations:
Math Station

Students put their problem-solving and mathematical thinking skills to work through engaging activities designed to make math feel practical and fun.
Finance Station

Students explored financial literacy concepts and learned how the math they encounter in school connects to real-world money decisions.
Gaming Station

Students used strategy, critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving—all while having fun.
And then came one of the students' favorite parts...
The Sharpe Sessions Candy Store!

Students used play money they earned throughout the program to make purchasing decisions at our candy store. It wasn't just about getting candy. It was an opportunity to practice real-world decision-making—budgeting, spending, prioritizing, and thinking about the consequences of financial choices.
And thanks to the incredible support of our community, every student received a backpack filled with school supplies to help them begin the new school year prepared and confident.

We believe learning should be memorable. It should be interactive. And most importantly, students should be able to see why what they're learning matters. That's what we strive to create through our summer enrichment experiences. A space where students can discover that they're not just learning math—they're developing skills they can use for life. Thank you to our families, volunteers, supporters, and community partners who helped make this experience possible.
We can't wait to see what's next!
