This Week’s Tip: The Dangers of Self-Studying for the SAT
Let’s get real: Self-studying can be smart—but it’s not always strategic.
Some students thrive with SAT books and YouTube. But for others? It’s a fast track to burnout, confusion, and plateaus.
Here’s why:
You don’t know what you don’t know.
Many students waste precious time reviewing the wrong material—or worse, solidifying bad habits. They miss out on targeted feedback, which means they practice the same mistakes over and over. They spend hours grinding with no clear roadmap or timeline.
So what can parents do?
Here are 3 ways to make self-study more effective:
-
Start with a diagnostic test.
Let data—not guesswork—drive their focus. -
Use tools that give feedback.
Desmos, Khan Academy, and Sharpe Sessions videos all offer ways to learn from mistakes (not just repeat them). -
Know when to get support.
If your child’s score has stalled, or they’re getting overwhelmed, that’s your sign: it’s time to bring in a coach.
💡 Remember: SAT scores = scholarship dollars. Every point counts—and so does your strategy.

Quote of the Week

“The most dangerous thing about what we don’t know… is not knowing we don’t know it.”
— Donald Rumsfeld
When it comes to studying for the SAT—or building confidence in math—this quote hits home.
Most students think they’re "okay" in math until test day proves otherwise. That’s the danger: the unknown gaps—the formulas they thought they mastered, the word problems they misunderstood, or the timing strategy they never practiced.
That’s why we never recommend going into test prep blindly. Self-studying is powerful, but only when it’s strategic and self-aware. The key is using tools like our SAT Error Book and SAT Cheat Sheet to uncover exactly what you don’t know—so you can master it early and score higher.
